Thursday 26th September
Sponsored by Shipston Veterinary Centre
The role of resident vet in the remote British Overseas Territories of the Falklands, St Helena, Tristan da Cunha and Ascension is like no other. On any given day, Jonathan Hollins might be waging war against an invasive parasite that makes Alien look mild-mannered, relocating herds of reindeer or rescuing animals from subtropical cloud forests.
The Territories’ most famous resident, Jonathan the nearly 200-year-old Giant Tortoise, also keeps Joe on his toes from faking his own death in a two-day sunbathing session to his fierce resistance to throat swabs.
Vet At the End of the Earth is a truly unique account of a vet’s life in some of the most beautiful, remote, dangerous, and extraordinary landscapes in the world. All Creatures Great and Small in the South Atlantic, Joe Hollins’s story is as entertaining as it is astonishing.
Jonathan Hollins MRCVS trained at Cambridge and has been a working vet for four decades. Since the mid-2000s, he has spent long periods in the South Atlantic islands and has a home on St Helena. He has written for the UK national press and presented documentary features for BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4. When in the UK he has a home in Winchester. Vet at the End of the Earth is his debut memoir.
